Social Action at FUSW

The mission of the Social Action Committee is to provide awareness and opportunity for action to our congregation and the community at large to implement the UU principles through involvement in projects within and outside FUSW that address hunger, poverty, tolerance, equality, freedom and environmental issues.

Our action groups include:
 

 

Action and Advocacy:  Fax, write, phone, and discuss national and international issues of peace and justice.   CONTACT: JOHN MURRAY

Clean Out Your Desk:  Our annual early summer collection of school supplies for rural Nicaragua, together with Maryland-based group, Quest for Peace. . CONTACT: MARIA HARRIS.

Common Ground Coffeehouse: FUSW's monthly concerts bring in-house, local, and nationally touring folk, pop, jazz and other artists to FUSW and the wider community.  All profits support the Common Ground Microcredit Fund, which benefits local groups such as Midnight Run, Beczak Environmental Center; regional, national, and global charities, service, and justice agencies.  CONTACT: MARIA HARRIS OR CARTER SMITH

Fair Trade Coffee Club: Members and friends of FUSW can become club members to purchase organic, shade-grown, fairly traded coffee.  CONTACT: JANIN GUNDERMAN

Food to "Feed the Hungry": Food in our hall box is delivered to Yonkers for Saturday distribution at St Joseph's Church in conjunction with Sacred Heart of Dobbs Ferry. CONTACT: MARIA HARRIS

Global Warming and Environmental Protection: spread knowledge, take action toward solutions  CONTACT: STU CAPLAN

Hats for Survival: Members and friends knit, crochet or sew simple hats to be distributed to the homeless, on Midnight Runs. CONTACT: JOYCE FISH 

Help Save Darfur: Phone, e-mail, write, protest,  march, or fund-raise to end genocide, and help over 2 million refugees in Sudan.  contact Stu Caplan, MELODY COOPER.  Also, see SaveDarfur.org.

Kenya Project: A computer hardware and software donation campaign that benefits schools in rural Kenya. CONTACT: MARIA HARRIS

Midnight Run: Monthly program--members, friends go into Manhattan to give food, clothing, and human connection to homeless men and women.  In constant demand are: food and clothing donations, help with packing lunch and clothing bags at FUSW, and adults and youth to go on the Run.  CONTACT: ART LOWENSTEIN OR ANNIE PATTON

SPECTRUM:  A group for human beings across the spectrum: Straight, Bisexual, Lesbian, Gay, Transgender, Queer and Questioning.  FUSW has worked to be an inclusive community for many years.  This group discusses and publicizes issues with the goal of extending acceptance and human rights to all, in our community, state, nation.
