The Process of Making Music

It is always nice to receive a new track from your favorite artist. An artist who speaks to your deepest senses will always cause excitement whenever they talk of something lined up. Except sometimes they take too long to make that announcement.

Why is this so? Just what process does it take to make the music we enjoy? Here’s a brief look at this process.

Conception

Yes, it all begins with a thought. This could be the greatest step as everything else is built around what comes out of the conception stage. The artist decides which theme they want to address – social justice, politics, love, etc. – then starts to string together words to bring out this message.

Although it appears like the simplest thing, this is probably the most difficult step of making music. Just finding that idea could take months.

Approaching the Production House

Armed with lyrics, the artist approaches a producer to help them turn the words into music. This stage is made up of several sub-steps that vary in thoroughness and speed from one production house to another.

  • Creating the beat

Once a musician makes understood to the producer what they are looking for, the producer sets out to create a beat that works to harmonize the singer’s dream. The beat will often depend on the actual song genre.

  • Recording

The artist goes in front of the mic and sings out the composition with direction from the producer. This is where back up artists come in. It also involves a lot of rehearsal and retakes.

  • Mixing and mastering

The audio track is created by harmonizing the singer’s vocals and the beat, then adding effects. This area requires a lot of expertise in production. After this stage the audio track is ready.

With the audio, the artist may then go further to create a video for the track.
